Nature-wise Espoo

Roadmap aims for 2035

Espoo has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future with the City Board's approval on February 10th.

The Nature-Wise Espoo roadmap aims to improve biodiversity while the city grows. A key objective is to create a vibrant and connected ecological network by 2035. In practice, this means the recovery of Espoo's diverse natural habitats, such as forests, seashores, and river valleys, as well as enhancing recreational opportunities for city dwellers through diverse green areas that support biodiversity.

The City Environment Sector is already doing a lot of work for nature, and in the future, new operating models will be developed to reduce harm to nature and increase nature's benefits. For example, the Green Factor tool will be introduced in zoning, guiding the amount of green space in construction.

Promoting biodiversity is a joint effort in which Espoo invites residents, businesses, and organizations to participate. Everyone can contribute by, for example, joining voluntary work events or establishing their own yard meadow.

The Vibrant Espoo action plan and the city-wide promotion of biodiversity go hand in hand, making Espoo an even more vibrant and greener city.
