Espoo fights invasive species with a mobile game
This summer, the focus is especially on garden lupine and Himalayan balsam. Participants can earn a cash reward for their approved efforts—up to 20 euros per hour.
The campaign begins in early June and will continue as long as the reward budget of 12,000 € lasts. To get involved, simply download the Crowdsorsa app. Through the app, users video a patch of plants before and after removal. The app then evaluates the scope of the work and calculates the reward based on the plant species, density, and area.
The goal is to protect biodiversity in an easily accessible and rewarding way. Experiences from previous years have been extremely positive, and the campaign has inspired people of all ages to join in. The app also features "bonus areas" where the reward is higher than usual.
Don't forget about the community-based Eloisa Espoo volunteer events, which also focus on removing invasive species. In addition to the removal efforts, these events offer a variety of changing activities. Participants can, for example, take part in guided lupine graphics workshops and spread good cheer to local nursing homes by arranging bouquets from surplus flowers.
